DESIGN

MULTIPLE POCKETS

The Rock Bag features multiple storage components both inside and out:

  • Zipper pockets
  • 1 slide-in compartment at the back
  • 3 internal dividers
  • Threaded lock pocket in the front for important items
  • Small item pouch inside (for keys, wallet, cards, etc.)

This organization system keeps items neatly separated and easily accessible to meet the user’s needs.

THREADED LOCK

Using CAD, I designed a threaded lock mechanism to secure important items in the front, making them harder to access without intentional effort. The lock functions like a screw thread, where unscrewing it releases the closure, and it is designed to be easily removed or replaced with different shapes and styles.

TENSIONER

A custom-made adjustable tensioner was designed to fit the 2” strap, making it easier to secure and adjust the bag’s height.

PROCESS

CONCEPT SKETCH & RAPID PROTOTYPES

Through concept sketching, I wanted to use striking colors for style while maintaing the functions for a travel bag. I created rapid prototypes of each iteration that tested the threaded component as well as testing for size, function, and patterning.

TECH PACK & BILL OF MATERIALS (BOM)

After prototyping, I created the patterns and tech pack in Adobe Illustrator to figure out sizing, seam allowances, and manufacturing. The Bill of Materials (BOM) helped me get a sense of material costs and callouts for different components needed for creating the bag.

FINAL PROTOTYPE PHASE

Through multiple prototypes, I resolved pattern issues and selected durable ripstop nylon as the lining material for storing items inside the bag.
