DESCRIPTION

Spool is a cord organizer that tidies up your cables with a simple twist. Inspired by a screw’s threading motion, it pulls cords in as you twist, keeping them neatly stored and easily accessible when pulled from both ends. Not only is it perfect for a clutter-free workspace, but it also aims to be a sculptural piece on your desk.

   BACKGROUND

CONCEPT



Inspired by a screw’s threading motion, I wanted to create a table accessory that pulls the cords in as you twist, keeping them neatly stored and easily accessible when pulled from both ends. Since it sits on a desk or office space, I found it functional to add different uses to it, such as a pen holder or a bowl.

STEP 1

CONCEPT SKETCH

Not only is it perfect for a clutter-free workspace, but it also aims to be a sculptural piece on your desk.

STEP 3

FUNCTION



Place your cable into the base slot, then insert the top screw component along its groove to lock the cable securely. As you twist the top piece, the cable gradually reels into the base, tidying up your space. To release the cables, simply pull from both ends, and the top screw component will unscrew back to the top.


STEP 4

SCALABILITY + MATERIAL



The Spool is designed to fit different cable thicknesses, from phone chargers to laptop cables, all within a single product. This reduces manufacturing costs since there is no need to produce multiple sizes, as one Spool can fit a range of cables.

Recycled ABS material is considered for the Spool due to its environmental benefits and the strength needed to hold the cables securely. A selection of pastel colors offer options to suit various environments and user preferences.



STEP 5

PACKAGING



The orthographic illustration on the cover introduces a playful yet simple concept for the Spool. Upon opening, users unscrew the top component to access the base, offering a gradual and hands-on introduction to the product’s functionality.


FINAL

CONTEXT VISUALIZATION



Spool can exist in various environments while maintaining its functionality. From communal areas to studios, offices, and personal spaces, it adapts to suit different settings, as illustrated in the images to the right.
