UFO LAMP


DESCRIPTION

UFO Lamp is not only adjustable in rotation, but brings a surprising twist when a light switch is turned on at the top. It brings a character that brightens up your room with one, simple touch.

   BACKGROUND

CONCEPT


Light has a unique ability to bring life to its surroundings. This inspired me to design a character that stands out in any space, whether it is in a living room or the outdoors. My goal was for people to engage with this lamp as if it were a lively presence in the room with them.

STEP 1

CONCEPT SKETCH + PROTOTYPE


This exploration focused mainly on form and got heavy inspiration from droids in sci-fi films. Their iconic round shapes gave a sense of endearment and friendliness that resonates with many people.

STEEL FRAME


I used a tube pipe roller to create a circular frame out of steel rods. From this, I created three identical leg bends before welding them in the correct position. 


STEP 4

CORK BODY


Using the lathe, I precisely cut all components to ensure the cork head fit into the body while maintaining enough tolerance for a smooth rotation. A Dremel was used to create holes for the lamp shade and the top button. Each foot was also turned on the lathe, providing the steel frame with big furniture pads to protect the ground surfaces when moving the UFO Lamp.

STEP 4

VACUUM FORM


I created the lamp shade mold on the lathe using scrap wood, then vacuum-formed the cover over the mold.


STEP 5

ILLUSTRATION


A simple illustration was created to show the playful nature of the UFO Lamp.
